Personally we use a caching only DNS server on our mail servers.  It really does speed stuff up especially when doing a lot of RBL look-up's.

It depends on your network and your budget.  I always prefer to have this kind of servers (dns, dhcp, web proxy, etc) on a separate box for 2 reasons, avoid unnecessary load and avoid having 2 or more services down when the box fails.

If you have a lot of DNS traffic and constant maintenance, that means you're taking bandwidth away from email traffic and another potential source of OS failure.  If email is down, you know it's going to be only email and you'll get only email related calls.  If you have DNS issues as well, you'll get those calls too.

Subject: [IMail Forum] DNS Server Running in the Imail Server

Dear List,

I have been running Imail 8.15 in a Windows 2003 server (which is also a DNS
server) without any problem so far.
But I wonder what is the best configuration of these two options:
Imail and DNS server in the same box, or each one in a separate server.

Regards

Mario Antonio
