Right, I was meaning a minimal requirement of going
to Workgroup, not that Standard didn't still exist.

I know for my business the Workgroup edition has been a huge help. I am able to run several applications using it where as otherwise they would have to use their own MSDE instances.

I really dont see how they cant, if your not too big of a shop then SQL server is massive overkill. The open source MySQL and PosgreSQL are damn good for free, theyre not too hard to configure and they both (I know MySQL does) run on windows as well as Linux or UNIX.

I'm amazed that MS is giving this
away! 2005 Express does not have a connection limit. It does have processor, database, and memory usage size limits.
Look here for a comparison of features/limits with the different version od SQL 2005
