One of the best ways is to install a front-end MX like IMGate that does most of its rejecting after the envelope step of MAIL FROM:, meaning each reject is only a a few bytes.

Even more aggressive and bandwidth-saving is IMGate's rate-limiting that hangs up on abusive IPs immediately after they connect.

Note that neither of the above has any effect on the speed of accepting legit mail. bandwidth limitation by tcp/ip protocol (SMTP) means that even legit mail gets rate limited.

Very bandwidth-expensive tactics are:

1) nobody@ aliases

2) accepting the entirety of every msg to scan its content before rejecting.
