Not at all. I just think it's excessive to pay $240 for the chassis, and
another $240 each for the two built-in interfaces. $240 to certify the pix
and two built-in interfaces I can understand, but $760 seems a bit excessive
for maybe an hour or two to run a base Pix through some automated tools.
The certification process would determine the condition of the unit, and
therefore whether or not you can get a support contract for it.

If you add a 1-port card it's another $240 to certify it. If you add a
4-port interface card, you have to put out another grand to certify just a
4-port NIC. Of course you're going to rip it out before Cisco looks at it
to avoid the cost, since those are cheap and easy to replace.

I don't see why IOS would not be transferable. It was bought and paid for,
just like the hardware. Note that there is a separate cost to upgrade the
IOS, so that should cover any ongoing development costs for new IOS images.

I certainly wouldn't expect them to send a new unit if it was indeed
damaged. Perhaps what would be good is an intermediate contract that does
not warrantee the hardware, but allows you to download firmware updates and
get support for them. That's all we wanted anyway.

As it is, it's much cheaper to buy multiple used units with the desired
firmware than to get a support contract with Cisco.

Darin.

I personally don't think having to pay a recertification cost is not
unrealistic. If you bought a fried pix off ebay do you really think its
fair to pay $240 for a support contract and have them send you a
replacement unit?

Not to mention in most cases you are paying for relicensing the IOS since
that is a non-transferable item.

But not a 515. Used was a _lot_ cheaper for a Pix with the latest firmware
at the time. About 1/3

So why not just buy a new PIX? You can get a 501 for less than that.

Not if you buy used hardware, though. For example, in order to purchase a
support contract for a Pix to get firmware upgrades, the Pix has to be
certified, at a cost of $240 for the chassis, and $240 per interface card.
So assuming you take out any additional interface cards, leaving only the 2
internal interfaces, you still have $720 for certification, plus $240 for
the support contract.

Yes, and it's cheap. $240 per year.

The only time we needed Cisco support, we got it.

Why would you say that? A comment on Cisco's support?

Yes ... Cisco makes IPSwitch look like grandma with cookies.
