My version is 8.22 also. The email is coming in from an Exchange server
that the ASSP/Imail system is acting as a gateway for.

It's terribly annoying. Nothing in the logs for Exchange or ASSP
indicate any trouble what so ever. The only oddity is in the Imail logs
and it's not consistant. One day it goes right through, the next it
bounces back from the Imail end of the server.

Nice subject line, Chris! It was an eye-catcher for me.

I've can see a similar issue in some rare cases since I upgraded from
8.15 to 8.22.

The messages are comming in from remote MTA's and even if the local
virt.Domain and the recipient mailbox does exist and anything seems
correct Imail does reject the message with the "not a localhost
[domainname] not a gateway" message.

I've tried almost anything. Deleting the virt.Host, creating it from new
trough the Imail-Admin, trough the WebMessagging interface or also -
like thousands of other virt.Hosts in the past - trough addomain.exe
from the command line.
Certain shortly added domains seemed working while others does not.
One time I was able to solve the problem by stopping and restarting the
SMTP-Service.

Markus
