That is really strange, since the SMTPD process indicates there is a
new/different connection in process.

Do you have anything in front of Imail, such as ASSP, IMGate or some
kind of virus scanner or proxy? Also, are you running anything else on
the Imail box, which touches or affects the mail flow?

Please turn on both debug and verbose messages for your smtp, if you
haven't already. That may lend a clue, also.
