Hi All,

We've got some weird behavior that might make sense to some, just not me. On
our old 7.15 IMail server (which we're in the process of retiring), we have a
client domain. One of the clients in this domain says that just in recent
days, the attachments to his emails disappear when he sends them to his two
co-workers (one co-worker is in a different domain that we host on the same
mail server, the other uses an msn mailbox. It seems a simple, if mysterious
problem: he sends a picture to these two other guys, and the picture doesn't
show up at the other end (somehow "stripped" from the email).

As a test, I asked this guy (Scott) to send a message with a picture to the two
co-workers (Mike and Eric). When Mike got the email from Scott, the picture
was apparently gone, so then he forwarded that email as an attachment (so we
get it unchanged) to both me and to Scott (the original sender). Then Scott,
for whatever reason, forwarded his copy of Mike's message to me. The result
is that I get two messages: first, I got the message from Mike with an
attachment of Scott's original email. Second, I get a message from Scott, with
an attachment of Mike's message, which has Scott's original email as an
attachment. The point here is that I get Scott's original message forwarde to
me as an attachment, from two different routes, but it should be the same
identical message (since it was forwarded as an attachment). It's not! The
two copies of different.

That's weird, but there's more. When Mike forwarded Scott's original message
to me, he said that the attached JPEG had been stripped. I looked at the
message content and found the original picture attachment still there, but the
message somehow changed so that it couldn't be viewed. So something is
corrupting the emails, possibly at Mike's computer. But then I got Scott's
email, with the second copy of Mike's forwarded message. It should be the
same, but in this message, the picture is displayed and can be saved as an
attachment.

I realize this is all convoluted, so here are the original message headers. I
could use whatever insight anyone cares to share.

Thanks,

Ben

Mike,

Here is what Ben wants to have done. I have attached a pic to see if you can
open it. If you can not, follow what been wants done in the last paragraph.
I sent a copy to Eric D. to see if he can open it.

Thanks,

Hi Scott,

I got your attachment with no problem at all.

So, the second test is for you to send an email to one of your co-workers
that has this problem (the attachment gets stripped off) and then let me
know the exact date and time of the message, and whom it was sent to.

There is one more useful thing that you could do: have someone forward to me
one of those "stripped" emails so that I can look at it. They must send it
as an attachment (in Outlook or Outlook Express, you right-click on the
message, then just forward as attachment). If you don't forward it as an
attachment, then I can't see the internals of the message as they were when
they arrived at your computer.

Thanks,

Ben
