Kevin; Before I begin listing the problems that I have found, let me state that e-mail is not instant messaging. There is no gaurantee that it will be delivered within a specific amount of time. Because of modern technology, messages are usually delivered very quickly, but e-mail is NOT instant messaging.
In this case, it looks like there are several problems with both DNS records and with the manner in which the receiving mail servers are setup at TYSON.COM. First, DNS reports they two mail servers - They are pps1.tyson.com and pps2.tyson.com and both have the same priority - 10. One should have a priority of 10 and the other another priority level. Both mail servers have the proper REVERSE DNS entries setup: >From the query: 22.3.66.199.in-addr.arpa pps1.tyson.com. [TTL=7200] 23.1.66.199.in-addr.arpa pps2.tyson.com. [TTL=7200] There also appears to be a DNS server issue here. While they have four DNS servers listed, it appears that at least two of them point to the same physical DNS server. This is not an uncommon problem and recently happened when the State of Illinois changed circuit providers and had to re-do their IP addressing - they pointed all four of their DNS addresses at the same server, it went down, and no one could send or receive e-mail for two days. >From the query: WARNING: Although you have at least 2 NS records, they may both point to the same server (one of our two tests shows them being the same, the other does not), which would result in a single point of failure. You are required to have at least 2 nameservers per RFC 1035 section 2.2. Even though they have four DNS servers, older versions of Microsoft server DNS software frequently have problems querying beyond the primary DNS servers. Additionally, when queried in DNSREPORT.COM, the mail servers names don't match what's in the DNS records, but appear as: intlpp01.tyson.dmz and intlpp02.tyson.dmz. Both of those names are non-existant in the host record names and, therefore, cannot receive mail for tyson.com. >From the query: pps1.tyson.com claims to be non-existent host intlpp01.tyson.dmz: 220 intlpp01.tyson.dmz ESMTP Tue, 2 Oct 2007 09:42:05 -0500 pps2.tyson.com claims to be non-existent host intlpp02.tyson.dmz: 220 intlpp02.tyson.dmz ESMTP Tue, 2 Oct 2007 09:42:33 -0500 The network admins at tyson.com have several issues they need to clean up before they can expect messages to be properly received from other mail servers. See: http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=tyson.com&token=16d0326030 46a0432c6048752aab9019 for more information. The specific lines in question are highlighted in yellow in the report.
