We use a separate LDAP server, not the mail server. We aren't actually running IMail any longer but I don't think it matters. We built a process that updates the LDAP server from the mailbox servers every 15 minutes. It's obviously not perfect; we do occasionally hear from a client that just created a new user that fails initially, but it works pretty well for us.
