[IMail Forum] checking for unread messages

Does anybody know how I can check for unread messages without 'logging
in' to the web messaging service, i.e. which file in a users' folder
could I parse for this information? There is the .mbx and a .uid file
that looks potentially helpful. Does anybody know the structure of the
.uid file?
