That was my first idea, but the problem is that we have about 2000
customers, and only about 30 to 40 are part of another domain. We don't
want the other users to be able to have accounts from the other domains.
I'm trying to test now to see if I can just use a username@domain rather
than just username to check their email that way. As you can tell, I'm
pretty confused by the whole thing. I'm a programmer, not a network
tech! :-)

Hi,
as soon as I understand you have the same user id but for different
domains.
if it's right then just use domain aliases (as many as you need) and
you'll use the same mailbox.
Look at virtual domain properties to set domain aliases>
