The reason it is so common is that the installation instructions make it
VERY clear that you MUST use the name of the machine.

I was told the following by tech support regarding changing the official
host name to what it really should be (domain.com rather than
mail.domain.com):

  Please change the official host name from machinename.domain.com to
  domain.com instead. After renaming the official host name say NO whent
  prompted if you are creating a new host. You are not creating a new host
but
  renaming the existing one.

  When changing the official host name it is important to follow all the
steps
  as it is described in the manual on page 26.

I had heard here about someone who had had troubles renaming the official
host name, so the instructions on page 26 may have been the problem.
