So does this mean that v6.03 + the smtp patch is a production ready package?
Or if installed, will it cripple an otherwise fully operable v5.08?

In other words,  will Imail lose any functionality or become unstable if the
upgrades are installed?

Currently, we've got no fancy bells and whistles type of templates  - but
things DO work as they are.
