2000 mail accounts is comparatively trivial. One person reported here an
Imail machine with 250,000 mail accounts (but he used a Unix machine for
his outgoing gateway). Many other Imail machines have 10's of 1000's of
mail accounts.

At this point, most, but not all, mail servers on Linux, FreeBSD, the *nix,
and NT are pretty good.
If you need groupware features rather than just standards-based Internet
mail, then sendmail and Imail aren't for you.
If it's groupware on W2K, then someone has arranged it that your only
"choice" is Exchange.
If you don't need groupware on W2K, then Imail is a great solution for
standards-based mail + Web mail.
