But wouldn't it be better to leave the MX records and above all the users' 
outgoing SMTP server in their mail programs unchanged, and just redirect 
Imail's outgoing mail through the NAVIEG gateway.

Does NAVIEG support anti-relay (relay for addresses) and SMTP AUTH?

There is a design and coding fault in Imail's "Send all mail through a 
gateway" because Imail also forwards all relayed domain through the 
gateway, rather than delivering it to the ip address of the relayed domains 
found in NT hosts file.  So if you are relaying for downstream domains, you 
can't use "send mail through a gateway".
