Haven't tried your telnet solution but I'm getting this for accounts where
they do have a directory created.
Like yourself I don't like to just create the directory so we go in and
receive a test message through the IMail client to initialise the account.
Then we drop in our virus filter .fwd file into the new user's directory.
I've just seen the forwarding problem where I removed a forward and the
Administrator says it has gone but it is still forwarding new mail on.
In case it was the LDAP, I've tried to optimise the LDAP Db both at the host
and Virtual Hosts level to no avail. If I Initialise the LDAP Db, is there
anything I can do to the registry to get it to build in more information. I
think it only rebuilds what's in the registry which looks like FullName and
MailAddr.
Also if I'm starting from scratch with the database is there anything I can
do with the attr.ini file to add in some attributes automatically rather
than manually creating them from the IMail Administrator. Given the choice
I'd rather enter just the value rather than having to create the attribute
as well.

I don't use LDAP, but the same problem holds true for other user
information -- the key is that the account has to be "initialized" first.
The problem I have is in setting the forwarding and reply-to addresses, but
IMail fails to set the information (but says that it does!!!) if the account
hasn't been "initialized".
>From what I can tell, the initialization is simply creating a directory for
the user (for example, creating the directory C:\IMAIL\USERS\scott.perry).
But I haven't been daring enough to try creating the directory, in case
there is more done than just that (such as LDAP information).
The account gets intialized when the user first sends or receives E-mail
(and possibly under other situations). What I do to quickly initialize
accounts is to telnet to port 110 (POP3), and keep typing "USER user.name"
followed by "RSET" (which lets you do it again). FYI, if it says "Welcome",
the account exists (you didn't type it wrong), but if it says "send your
password", the account doesn't exist (a security flaw, in my opinion).
If I'm missing an obvious way around this, someone please let me know! :)
