What is even scarier is that almost every piece of mail software out there (Outlook,
Eudora, etc.) lets you do the same thing. And you know what, the post office probably
wouldn't notice (or care) if I put your street address as the return address on my
mail!
The reality is that SMTP never had any authentication to it, so anyone can claim to be
anyone. The return address on an E-mail is for the convenience of the recipient, so
they know who the person sending the mail claims to be. Letting users choose the
correct return address saves a lot of hassles (for example, should I not be allowed to
send E-mail from my work address when I am at home?).
