yes, there's that perforamance issue, too, but I'm first concerned whether 
it will even function as he imagines (me not knowing exactly what his 
objectives are yet), before thinking about the netwrok file-server vs local 
files performance issue.

yep, file-level sharing across a network is really slow compare to local 
file access.
