We use IPSentry to monitor all of our ISP gateways and servers - it can page
and/or email you with alerts.....new add-on modules allows a progreesion
mode of 1)attempting to stop and start a particular service if found to be
not functioning, 2) reboot the machine automatically if 1) fails.
Email/pager notices can be programmed to go out anytime during this process.
You can also set it up to page you when the server is back up again!
(especially nice during those 3a.m. glitches - helps you get back to sleep!)
