384 is on the lowside, imo.  I wouldn't run with less than 512, and give it 
all to SQL.

Do you have 64 or 128 megs of cache on the RAID controller? hardware cache 
can help a lot

Do you have SQL logging running one a separate disk channel (not the RAID 
controller)?

The SQL box is running just the Imail database or other stuff?

Consider yourself lucky to have gotten this far with Access and 40K records 
and high rate of simulatneous access.

Well, it surely can depend on how many users are logging in simultaneously, 
and Imail is querying the database for the user records.

Can you see whether the delay is in the Imail box or SQL box?
