Thank you! :-}
That's the answer I'd been looking for.
John Cesta
John,
I have had people who were changing the IP (the one for the NIC) actually
have both the old and new IP and configured the new IP to use the same OHN,
Alias, Top Dir and all other data on the Host Configuration screen, to make
IMail able to use both. Once the change over was complete (and TTLs
expired), they just removed the old IP from the registry (and the TCPIP
settings) and all worked well. They changed the IP on the IP tab and added
the old IP to the Advanced settings. The IP in the IP tab is the one that is
most significant to IMail and your system. That is the one I would change,
since you are really changing the IP of the system, not just IMail.
Yes, you _do_ use a HOSTS file and that has nothing to do with what DNS you
use (and I use BIND, too!). NT _will_ check the HOSTS file, before
performing a DNS request (MS says so!). So, what I said is true for you,
too. When you first install TCPIP, NT will update the HOSTS file, and when
you change the IP/host/domain names, it is very likely it will _not_ update
it (about 1 in 10 chance it will, from my experience). That will mean that
the 'hostname' for the computer will return the Old IP (from HOSTS, not
DNS!), if you do not fix the HOSTS file. I cannot tell you how many people
believe the same as you and how many of them I have helped by editing their
HOSTS file. That is why I bring this issue up so often,!!!
Besides, it is so simple to 'fix' that it is not worth taking the chance of
not fixing it! And it reduces the load on your DNS, if each host does not
need to check DNS for its own hostname. And finally, if DNS does go down, at
least the system can resolve itself.
