Welcome to the Last Chance Saloon.

ok, that's the SMTP client for sending mail.

impossible to say. I can't see any relation between smtp client/sending
processes not terminating, and Imail SMTPD process receiving mail from VMS.

The MX records that point to Imail are not queried by Imail, afaik. Why
would Imail want to query for which ip to send mail for domains that are on
the Imail machine? Imail "knows" what domains are local w/o querying DNS.

These are SMTP32 client processes or SMTPD32 server processes? If the
latter, then I'd suspect that VMS and Imail aren't Happy Together, so
you're pb will disappear when VMS stops relaying to Imail's SMTPD
server. If they are SMTP client processes then that's outbound mail and
the sysMMDD.logs are worth studying. It's reallly too bad Imail debugging
doesn't stamp the debug lines with time/date/pid.
