".dat" files implicate Microsoft.  I believe it's Outlook that generates .dat files 
that are NOT readable by standard mail clients.  It is typically used with RTF.  If 
messages aren't viewable in web mail when sent with Outlook, but messages with the 
same attachment are viewable when sent with another program, you can place the blame 
on Microsoft.

I have reported this problem to Ipswitch many times.  Any MS Office document
(Word, Exel, etc.) attachment sent between two domains on the same Imail
server will be altered by Imail most of the time.  Imail adds a funny header
to the file, and changes the file extension to .dat.  This is NOT a POP3
client issue.

Ipswitch continues to ignore this issue.
