Thanks for all the e-mails. Here is more of what I have learned:
1) iMail appears to put in the continuation marker at about 256 bytes
(CR/LF/TAB), but on the subsequent break point (512) is only putting in a CR/LF
and missing the TAB. So the third part is now considered a header (apparently
iMail is coming out with a fix for this).
2) If I put in my own continuation markers I can retrieve the subject line just
fine.
3) The RFC's do not specify a limit on the subject line - although SMTP might.
4) Other email tools like Lotus Notes (OK so maybe this isn't a real tool)
permits the long subject lines - I have used the iMail client to forward the
email to my Notes account and I got the whole subject line successfully.
5) My original intention wasn't to allow extremely long subject line lengths but
since the RFC didn't specify one I didn't either, but I did expect my clients to
use more then 256 characters.
NOTE: my application is merely using the mail server as storage and regular
email client tools are not used. Its a Text Messaging system so I went for
speed by putting the text in the subject line instead of the body. All my
interfaces are via JavaMail.
Thanks for everyones input!
