How much drive space do you have free on the volumes where you are storing
the spool and user directories? If the cute li'l drive light is going at
warp speed and you see a lot (more) Disk IO activity, perhaps your drive is
fragmented to hades and therefore it takes longer to store and retrieve
files. You can upgrade to a larger drive, or if there's enough room, get a
disk defrag program for NT.
