I can't see anything wrong, or useful, about doing that ?!?!?  Have 
you misstated or have I misunderstood what you've done there ?

Sal, the PIDs are different above.

But whatver, it appears that you are not seeing the pb where the SMTP 
AUTH process simply fails to repsond the the clietn sending SMTP AUTH.

Where is your user base?  Imail? NT? ODBC?
