Len,
Ye, the Alternate message is given when IMail is setup to relay for that
domain (or all, if Anyone is set).
Been a while since I tested, but if 'Anyone' is selected, I think it always
answers that way, unless it is a recognised local domain. Without seeing all
related configuration info, I would hesitate to say why IMail is giving that
message for this 'local' domain. I'd have to say that IMail does think this
domain is local, but maybe not a virtual domain.
The 220 line from IMail, in a telnet session, shows the host is a different
domain!
220 X1 NT-ESMTP Server ummhosting.nl (IMail 6.05 302-1)
and that is the host that answers for pop.umm.nl (the MX host, even though
same IP). So, I cannot tell if the umm.nl is really a unique domain (or
even) in IMail (yet). It could just as easily be a Alias for the above
domain (but that too should have show the 'Ok it for..., message!). But,
from what I see in this session below, it may not be a valid domain in
IMail!
220 X1 NT-ESMTP Server ummhosting.nl (IMail 6.05 1107-1)
mail from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
250 ok
rcpt to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
550 not local host umn.nl, not a gateway
rcpt to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
250 ok deliver to alternate
rcpt to: info
250 ok deliver to alternate
rcpt to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
250 ok its for <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
We know that root is a valid user (in any IMail domain) and as you can see
it did answer correctly in the last line and that differs from all the
others.
Also, note that a truely invalid domain name, did give the 'not local host'
message (first RCPT TO: line!, my mispelling).
So, all this tells me is that there is still something funny going on here.
IMail does recognise and deny relay for true non-local domains, but still
not sure why it 'seems' to recognise umm.nl domains, but give the
'Alternate' message. Maybe it has something to do with the fact the OHN is
not a FQDN, just a domain name. That could mean the HOSTS file is not quite
right (my 'best' guess!). Maybe some other entries are in HOSTS that would c
ause IMail to accept and relay (it can, as you know) for these other unseen
domains.
