Disclaimer:

I am using IMail for the first time and am finishing up reading the manual. :-)

****************************

My situation is that I am converting a 100-ish user CC:mail server setup to IMail.

In preparation for this move I have converted all users from the CC:Mail client to Outlook Express w/IMAP4 access to the CC:Mail Databases via their IMAP4 services interface. Outgoing mail goes via their SMTP services to an external Mail Relay Host since CC:Mail does not support that level of SMTP functionality. I also use NAV Email scanner in this mix.

In my hope of minimizing user disruption and a gradual cut over of users I figured I could do one of the following methods:

1.    Use the Peer server technique as described in the IMail manual - with a modification.

Or,

2.    Front the CC:Mail SMTP server with the IMail server. Populate it with all of the users accounts, then set forwarding on all accounts to the CC:Mail SMTP server based accounts. When I want to convert a user, I drop the forwarding, copy his IMAP folders and update his Outlook Express account info to point to the IMail server.

Now the questions:

For Method 1:

CC:Mail I suspect  MAY support the SMTP Verify command as needed for Peer server operation, but I don't know and have no documentation available to determine this. QUESTION: Is there a way I can test this via the Verify command (I don't know the command syntax of the sequence of commands to test this).

I figured if I implemented a Peer server technique but leave IMail with the lowest preference, Incoming mail would come only to the IMail server. Both servers would be configured as the same e-mail domain. As I cut over a user, I would add him to the IMail user accounts and as a result IMail would stop "forwarding" the user to the old server. I would manually copy over the users old IMAP folders and update his Outlook Express account setting to complete the move. QUESTION: If the CC:Mail server does not support the Verify command, would it still work or is there a way to 'help' make it work?

For Method 2:

Having both servers configured with the same e-mail domain name, is there a way to set forwarding on IMail so that the users I keep on the old server during the gradual conversion will get their incoming mail forwarded by IMail to CC:Mail SMTP. When I then move them to the new server, I remove the forward rule, move the folders and change the OE setting as mention above.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!
