If I might comment. I think this is a standard for Email, not of any one
programmer or companies choosing. Back when the wonderful world wide web
was starting there were certain specifications established for formatting
and reserved control characters. There key boards supported far fewer
characters sets and so there had to be some sacrifices made. Al very
similar to certain reserved words/key sequences for the operating systems.
I believe this is probably one of them.
