No, that is not needed.

Anything 'change' on that computer, in the week before the trouble began?
Any new software installed or enabled or reconfigured? Any new errors or
warnings in NT Event logs?

I think this is a clue: <We have telneted to port 25  on the
@home ip addresses and are able to connect (some of the time).

If IMail can connect, it should go through, but if it cannot, that would
duplicate your symptoms. The real question is, 'does the email eventually
get through?'. If it does, I would have to believe the problem is on the
@home.com end. If the users of the problem domain, always get 'returned'
messages, then that would indicate the problem is bigger.

Just because you see an occasional MX connect fail message, does not mean
that there is anything more than a transient problem. This is perfectly
normal, and most likely to occur, when the remote end is busy or not
answering.
