They are afraid that their customers are going to use another SMTP server to send out
spam. Most spammers pay $20 to get a dialup account for a month, then connect to an
open relay (if you have an open relay, CLOSE IT -- spammers WILL find you) to send out
100,000's to 1,000,000's of E-mails. A high enough percentage of the recipients know
how to trace the E-mail, generating a lot of complaints to the ISP. So, they just
block access to port 25, typically without having a way for legitimate customers to
bypass it.
