We have had occasional problems delivering mail to some sites. One example at
the moment is Bath University in the UK. Their DNS setup shows the following for
their mail setup:
bath.ac.uk. 5D IN MX 3 bucs.bath.ac.uk.
bath.ac.uk. 5D IN MX 6 pat.bath.ac.uk.
bath.ac.uk. 5D IN MX 8 mercury.bath.ac.uk.
pat.bath.ac.uk. 5D IN A 138.38.32.2
mercury.bath.ac.uk. 5D IN A 138.38.32.81
bucs.bath.ac.uk. 5D IN A 138.38.32.34
bucs.bath.ac.uk. 5D IN A 138.38.32.36
bucs.bath.ac.uk. 5D IN A 138.38.32.41
bucs.bath.ac.uk. 5D IN A 138.38.32.14
The bucs addresses do not accept SMTP (I guess that's a fault of theirs and I'm
trying to contact them about it), but the others do. As the highest priority MX
line points to bucs, our IMail server says:
01:22 14:48 SMTP-(0000013A) Trying bath.ac.uk (0)
01:22 14:48 SMTP-(0000013A) Connect bath.ac.uk [138.38.32.14:25] (1)
01:22 14:48 SMTP-(0000013A) 421 SMTP service not available, closing transmission
channel
01:22 14:48 SMTP-(0000013A) SMTP_DELIV_FAILED
01:22 14:48 SMTP-(0000013A) >QUIT
and gives up.
Some other mail servers will try lower priority MX addresses if the first fails;
should IMail do that and, if so, how do I change the configuration at our end?
