IMail users,
We have been a long time user of the IMail product and are very familiar
with it features but I am unsure if the following is possible. IP Switch
support also was unclear if the following could be done and suggested this
posting to the list.
Basically we are replacing an old sendmail system with a new IMail system
and are needing to replicate some of the alias capabilities of sendmail.
Here is the situation. The mail host is "mail.someisp.com" and hosts the
mail for "someisp.com". There is an MX record and A record as follows"
someisp.com. in mx 10 mail.someisp.com.
mail.someisp.com in a x.x.x.x
That is all pretty simple but here is where it gets tricky. I have sold a
virtual server to mycustomer.com but have set this up as a sendmail alias
not as a actual virtual server. In other words any mail sent to
mycustomer.com would be delivered to mail.someisp.com and then there would
have to be an alias to deliver it to a local mail box. The alias file on
mail.someisp.com would look something like
[EMAIL PROTECTED] -> amailbox
[EMAIL PROTECTED] -> anothermailbox
My understanding of the way IMail handle aliases is that it can only alias a
local address to another local mail box. I know that you can have up to 25
host aliases and then in a small way replicate the kind of aliases I am
looking for but there are 2 problems that exist. First I am talking about
1500 domains that are setup this way. Second there would be some overlap of
usernames and aliases. To recreate the setup above I would have to add
mycustomer.com to the host alias line and then add the following aliases:
bob=amailbox
joe=anothermailbox
The problem here is that there is already a [EMAIL PROTECTED] and now amailbox
is going to get his mail. I hope this makes sense and there is someone that
can help.
