I'll talk to my boss about the RFCs/mail greeting issue. Not sure how
to go about fixing that one.
I'm not sure if this is the cause of you not being able to use the MAIL
FROM command or not (I'm a programmer, not a network guy) but we do have
SMTP blocked from anyone outside of our network both on the IMail server
itself, and I believe it's also being done at the router level.
Our firewall has been running smoothly for at least 2 years, and never
did this to mail on our other mail servers.
DNS is possibly a problem. We had to rebuild that machine the same day
our primay mail server and Exchange mail server all crashed...what fun!
I think that server is running fine now, though.
The only thing passing mail anywhere is our virus firewall to IMail.
Nothing else is running on the IMail server itself. The server is
ms1.wcn.net if that helps any. Didn't mean to hide it! :-)

A couple things here:
First, your firewall is breaking RFCs by blocking the mail greeting.
Not a big deal, but just thought you should know.
The only time I have seen this happen before was with a different mail
server (Unix) that would disconnect immediately after accepting the
message. The sending SMTP didn't receive confirmation that the mail was
delivered, so it would keep trying -- but, the Unix machine delivered
the mail successfully.
Second problem -- I've been sitting here for about 2 minutes now waiting
for a response back from the "MAIL FROM:" command. Nothing yet.
I'm guessing that your firewall is FUBAR and is mucking around with
SMTP. Your server is responding reasonably quickly, so I doubt that it
should be taking minutes to respond to the MAIL FROM: unless some sort
of lookup is being done. The firewall may be doing DNS lookups, but
using a poor or no DNS server.
Since you are hiding your mail server's identity, are you running a
program on the IMail server that gets the mail and passes it on to
IMail?
