"same": do you mean local disk drive or a 3rd box with a network 
share for mailbox storage (this has been shown to be extremely slow 
compared to local disk mailbox storage.

no they don't, each Imail server keeps its own list of accounts, even 
when usernames and passwords are in an external database.  you can 
only logon (pop, smtp auth, web mail) to the specific Imail machine 
that holds your mailbox.

One good reason for this is that the mailboxes are local to each 
Imail machine, so to accept mail for a mailbox, Imail has to know if 
that mailbox is local/exists without looking up in an external 
database for the answer to such a basic question.

Your approach will not result in hot-mirroring the Imail machines.
