Actually, that looks more like a telnet session. If the "Escape character..." line
appears in the IMail logs, there's probably a serious problem.
The "421" error code means that the mail server is in the process of shutting down.
Normally that's done during a stop/start of the service or a reboot, and the server is
back online in a few minutes. So, when IMail tries to send the mail 20 or so minutes
later, it will go through.
If the "421" error message is always showing up, the recipient's mail server is FUBAR
and needs to be fixed.

IMail is supposed to try connecting to the primary mail server. It does, and the mail
server essentially says "I'm not ready to accept mail right now, but I will in a few

You haven't missed anything; the problem is at the other domain. You should contact
them and let them know there is a problem. If they are not willing to fix it, you
could resort to adding a line in your HOSTS file that points to their secondary MX
record -- but this is NOT recommended, and should only be done if the remote domain
refuses to fix their problem, and you must get mail there.
