I faced a similar situation and ended up putting the good secondary IP
address and domain into the //winnt/system32/driver/etc/hosts file on the
imail box. Then when Imail saw that domain, it would use the address in the
hosts file rather than the mx record returned from DNS query.
Temporary patch until DNS entries get fixed or mail server comes back up.

Subject: [IMail Forum] Problems with mail delivery
We have some problems with the delivery of mails to certain domains. IMAIL
tries to connect to a mail server, but gets the follwing response:
Connected to abc.def.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
421 SMTP service not available, closing transmission channel
Connection closed by foreign host.
The recipient has other mail exchanger, which work without problems, but
IMAIL does not use these, our server tries to connect the primary mail
server of the recipient.
We are using IMAIL 6.06. Is there anything i can do , that our server
connects to the secondary mail-servers of the recipient? Have i missed
something in the manual?
Thanks,
Heinrich
