Well I'm not Len but I'll give it a try :-)

I'm curious why you consider the mail server you're trying to send
to as sensitive? No one else will be able to see if it's reachable.

"Trying xxxxxxxxxxxx.com" followed by "MX connect fail xxx.xx.xxx.xxx"
means for whatever reason your mail server can't reach xxxxxxxxxxxx.com.
Try pinging that address or telnetting to if *from* your mail server.

Almost assuredly, IMail is reporting it can't reach xxxxxx.com. First question
is "xxx.xx.xxx.xxx" the correct IP for xxxxxxxxxxxx.com? If not, that's your
problem.
If it is correct it could be a routing problem, as I mentioned above, try pinging
to see if the routing is correct.
