Actually, that isn't the case.  SMTP AUTH can't be done at the primary if it receives 
it from the secondary (rather, the secondary can't usually do SMTP AUTH, unless it 
knows all accounts/passwords).  IMail on the primary has to either accept or reject 
all mail from the secondary; it can't go past that to check the IP address that 
connected to the secondary (Declude does do this however).

So, relay checking should be done at both the primary and the backup.
