If you deleted *all* the items in there, then you probably deleted some legitimate 
mail (any mail waiting to be delivered) and all your log files...

There are tons of possible reasons:  Someone hijacked your mail server and is sending 
spam, you have a customer sending out tons of E-mail, you have a mail loop, etc.

The good news is that it's easy to find out.  Move those files out of there into a 
temporary directory, and look at them to see what is in them.  For example, if they 
all have the subject "YOU TOO CAN MAKE $5,000 A MONTH", you can probably guess what 
happened.
