I have experimented with this... Depending on the amount of RAM you have,
your networking infrastructure, and CPU speed, you will probably find
diminishing returns after about 48 processes... I've had it as high as 192,
but that was disastrous in some cases...

Keep in mind that you must pay attention to your available bandwidth, and
your DNS system response times...

If you were actively servicing the delivery of 50 concurrent email... that
might be analogous to serving the same number of concurrent Real Video
streams to dial-up customers... According to those guidelines, that's about
the most a single Real server should be made to handle and just about covers
a full T1...

I don't mean to suggest that email is nearly as intense,... but without
going into a lot of math, this might give you a frame of reference.

Hope this helps,
_M

BTW: We have an IMail server w/256M of Ram, a P2/450, and mirrored 20GB
drives on NT4/SP6a. It is connected to our network by a 100TX full-duplex
switch using an Intel 10/100 managed card. This moderate system can sustain
1800 outbound messages per hour while remaining responsive to all services
including web messaging. To improve and balance performance, we have moved
web messaging images off to a separate web server, and we have set web
process pooling enabled with 48 available threads. It's not a big system,
but it again offers a frame of reference.

| I've never done any experimenting with the maximum number of SMTP
| processes. But, I've read in here that you need to be careful,
| because if you have too many SMTP processes, you can run out of
| resources. The Knowledge Base ( http://support.ipswitch.com )
| explains how to add more. I believe that you can try adding
| about 50% more (if you have 30 now, you could increase it to 45);
| if all goes well, you can try increasing it again.
