On the recent subject of DNS messes, I've found through several tools that
my DNS entries are, as Len says, A MESS. My ISP hosts my entries and cannot
ever seem to get their entries cleaned up.

What I'd like to know is where, other than outdated and not-so-helpful
HOW-TO's and man pages, can I find a good, almost foolproof step-by-step for
beginners on setting up your first DNS server(s)?

Also, should I place my DNS completely inside or outside my firewall, or
should there be one on each side?

Since my ISP 'owns' my IP range, does that make it any more difficult? I'd
figure my ISP would be the only one allowed to be authoritative on my
reverse. Am I correct?
