We've noticed the same thing, and it's quite annoying. If IMail cannot
contact the MX machine, it should never ever deliver to an A record. I
think that's the cause of a *large* number of unknown user bounces with
IMail, and seems to happen more with list deliveries.

The sure cure is to set up Postfix or Sendmail as your mail delivery
server; we've never seen that problem after going with Len's IMGate
solution (http://imgate.meiway.com/) and using the same machine for smtp
delivery.
