random send errors? concur with chuck. check your nic and cable.
better yet, because some things are not worth figuring out,

do a shotgun fix.

easter egg the nic, cable, hub, anything else connection related:
swap it with 'known good' NOT 'new' stuff.

if we hear hoofbeats, we shouldn't think zebras.
can't connect?
it should be spinal to check the connection.

next check logs for configuration changes.
if somethings different,
how can it be that nothing changed?
check your event logs for changes in HW or SW.

search all the local drives for *.*
why?
when you have a full list of every file on the machine, sort by access. sort
by change.
sort by size. sort by creation date.
you get the picture.

what?! you don't have time to do this on production hardware?
just one incident like this, can be used to build your case
to management for a test bed and for hot spares.

reproducible configurations are unbeatable.
if you can roll it all out in one discrete stream
(gold disk, ghost image, whatever, it's all the same thing)
then you can roll it back out and overwrite a ruined config.
don't let yourself get caught without a backup,

and nowadays a backup is more than what's on magnetic media.
