It would be very nice -- and it would be nice if they changed the string 
"220 X1 %s" to "220 %s" (a nice, easy 10-second change) to become RFC 
compliant.  <G>  I'm guessing it's been that way for years, and they are 
afraid that it will break something else.

I hate that; I call it the "Poor man's firewall".  Not only are they 
breaking the RFC, they are also hiding everything except 0's and 2's (which 
likely would break if the server responded with a "450 Not ready" type 
response, which would probably come through as "**0**********").  It would 
be just as easy, if not easier, to block all characters after the initial 4 
characters.  If a mail server sends any sensitve information in those first 
4 characters, no firewall is going to help!
