On the backend Imail + SQL works extremely well. Imail doesn't put every
bit of info into the external database, and if you don't like Microsoft SQL,
you can also use the free MySQL running on a Unix machine. Imail + the
killer webmail templates is a great combo and worth the money. You can use
Unix list servers which scale much better than any Windows list server, and
cost zero $. You can also run Postfix as a mail relay to filter out spam,
and it will also perform virus scanning if you purchase a virus package.
Len Conrad could shed some light on the Postfix virus scanning solution he
has cooked up. Overall if you want to put the virus scanning, list serving,
and spam filtering on a Unix box you will save a big chunk of change. I'm
not sure how experienced you are with Unix, but using RedHat I have found
makes it easier for most who are just starting out on Unix.
