I JUST THOUGHT OF IT!!!!!
Do you have the office 2001 for the mac service pack installed? You need
this to use SMTP Auth..... Geez... I can't believe I didn't think of this
earlier when I first replied - especially since it was an issue I was
battling pre -SP1.

And if you do have it installed, I hereby slink back to my hole of thought
for another solution.
