Len's version has limitations like no large local database. With MAPS
charging $1,200 a year, some of the best Spam filtering is about to become
no longer available for Postfix users. There is ORBL, and ORDB, but so far
they are only mildly effective. Our database is a bit different than MAPS
or the ORBL and ORDB databases. We manage e-mail for about 29,000 domains
and our system uses traps to catch Spam coming into our local system. This
allows our database to grow quickly by trapping real Spam which doesn't
require anyone to report it, but we still manually confirm it.
I come from North Dakota where ethics mean something. I don't believe the
database, and informational web site we are building is stealing from Len,
but I do believe this is a community effort. We could charge $1,200 a year
and thumb our nose at those less fortunate, or just keep the database for
ourselves, but fighting Spam is a 365 day effort. The Postfixgate group
decided it would provide a low cost database, along with scripts, tips,
articles, and more, to those who fight Spam for a low cost that could
support our efforts. No one here will make a living from subscribers who
pay $20 per month, and why make the effort to provide a database, bandwidth,
etc., for free.
There are a lot of free sites out there like say Slashdot, who may
eventually disappear because the free model is hard to maintain. We chose a
low fee to keep our effort alive, and at the same time would allow anyone to
afford to have a database like the big boys that runs on a free *nix system,
with free software like Postfix.
We are working on a version which Scott may integrate into Declude so those
users can also have this database running on their Windows system with Imail
as their mail server.
People like you may want to choose sides, but this is a community effort.
I'm part of a community that fights Spam and so is Len. How we go about it
is up to each one of us. If you don't like our approach don't subscribe.
Once you hear how effective our database is however, you won't have many
other alternatives. I hope you'll appreciate our efforts when that day
comes rather than trying to shoot down our efforts to help out the Spam
fighting community.
