Perfect! Thanks very much. I had figured it wasn't my problem, but not
being too familiar with these response codes I thought I'd better ask.
And sorry to the list for the double postings. An error in my Outlook
processing rules sent everything into Deleted Items and I thought I'd
screwed up the posting.
Cheers,

That's because they find they don't have to work as hard if they blame
others.

You are correct.

Let's take a look...
>07:26 21:39 SMTP-(0000072C) processing C:\IMail\spool\Qf0990aa.SMD
>07:26 21:39 SMTP-(0000072C) Trying lightspeed.net (0)
This is IMail getting ready to send out the E-mail
>07:26 21:39 SMTP-(0000072C) Connect lightspeed.net [63.208.208.82:25] (1)
It has connected to lightspeed.net's one and only MX record.
>07:26 21:40 SMTP-(0000072C) 220 smtp05.mail.onemain.com ESMTP
>07:26 21:40 SMTP-(0000072C) >EHLO mysecretbase.com
>07:26 21:40 SMTP-(0000072C) 250-smtp05.mail.onemain.com
>07:26 21:40 SMTP-(0000072C) 250-PIPELINING
>07:26 21:40 SMTP-(0000072C) 250 8BITMIME
You say Hello, they say hello back. All is normal so far (usually you see
more options listed when using EHLO, but I don't think that's a problem).
>07:26 21:40 SMTP-(0000072C) >MAIL FROM:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
>07:26 21:42 SMTP-(0000072C) 451 DNS temporary failure (#4.3.0)
Here you asked to send an E-mail from [EMAIL PROTECTED] . They
responded that they are having a temporary DNS failure; thank you, come
again.
>07:26 21:42 SMTP-(0000072C) SMTP_DELIV_FAILED
>07:26 21:42 SMTP-(0000072C) >QUIT
IMail then does the right thing; it logs that the delivery failed, and it
sends "QUIT" to the remote mail server.
>07:26 21:42 SMTP-(0000072C) 221 smtp05.mail.onemain.com
>07:26 21:42 SMTP-(0000072C) requeuing C:\IMail\spool\Qf0990aa.SMP R0 T1
>07:26 21:42 SMTP-(0000072C) finished C:\IMail\spool\Qf0990aa.SMP status=3
... and re-queues the E-mail. IMail scores 100% on this transaction.
To answer the questions:
> "Whose fault was this?"
Definitely lightspeed.net's fault.
> "Whose DNS failed?"
Theirs. It's possible that they were looking up the A/MX records for your
domain, but they are not required to do that, and since they say it is a
temporary failure, they know that it will be working again sometime. That
means it is their fault. And, your DNS records are better than theirs (I
just tested both at our www.dnsreport.com site).
>"What could cause that?"
I would guess they are performing some tests on your domain name. FYI, you
do not accept bounce messages, so they could have found your address listed
at www.rfc-ignorant.org . But, their DNS servers seem to be down, so they
couldn't do the lookup.
>What is the significance of the #4.3.0 entry on that line?
None whatsoever. It is likely an internal code used for debugging the
problem. It looks like a reference to an RFC, but I don't think it
is. Smells like a Unix code of some sort.
