Like I said I deleted the list but that was not so easily done.

It is a strange problem. I don't see how you would make IMAILSRV send a
message to the list if you wanted it to. Somehow IMAILSRV is getting a
command instruction from the list and is responding to that. But I
can't find what is causing it. I can see exactly when this starts. I
checked every message in the log files within 10 minutes of that time
and there were no postings to the list period. So however IMAILSRV is
posting to the list it is not being logged. Yet they definitely exist
and there can be an astonishing number rather quickly.

I really don't care much about this problem as we only had one list and
we just deleted it. We will not allow any more lists.

I posted this just in case someone else has a similar issue then they
might find a similar thing in the archives.

That is probably the list server propagating the replies it is getting
every
time the postmaster at Excite's auto responder sends a message back to
the
list. based on what I've read I would guess this is an open list that
anyone can post to and that both ends are carrying on full out exchanges
of
messages. If you block one end or the other for a few hours it should
all
stop. Think of it as a positive feed back loop that will operate at the
maximum level until one end or the other either runs out of resources or
crashes, probably in that order.
